The New Site: Suggestions and Questions

Hey everyone!

It looks like most of you have figured out how to get started. The most obvious thing is for you to get a username/password so you can sign up and start using the site to its full potential. Then, you can edit your profile, add/request friends, post, add videos & photos, etc.  There are a few common questions: when you add your avatar, it will show up initially and then your name reverts to the standard avatar while the system processes your new avatar. So, it might take a bit for it to show up again. A lot of the newness will turn to familiarity as you continue experimenting with different features. If you've got a "how-to" question this is a good place to post your question. Others may have the same question(s), so let us know! Also, if there's something you'd like to see, post it here or send me a message.

We are aware of and we're working on a few glitches: the problems in requesting friends, editing profiles, and sending emails that some of you have been having. Please send me a message or post here if you have other problems. This is a work in progress, and we want to fix areas that you're having troubles with. So, please let me know.

Thanks!

~L.W.

Will you be adding Greg's picks somewhere on the site? Maybe Jakob and Fred's too, that would be cool. It was always interesting to learn about what he was listening to or reading.

Anyone else agree?

I'm using IE 7 on a PC. Don't have anymore pics to post at the moment so I can't reproduce the errors for now. I just know that I had two things happening - One - You'd choose upload from computer, and sometimes, it didn't switch over to give you the browse functionality to be able to browse to the file. When I was able to browse and upload, it would take me two shots to get the file up - It would error out the first time, and then the second time it would upload. Sorry I don't have the error **** at the moment - If I have something else to post, I'll make sure to screenshot the error.

Hi Ellen,
It would be most helpful if I knew the kind of error message (what happens or what the message says), if you're using a PC or Mac, and what browser. Send me a message so I can know and we can work on the problem? As noted, there are more glitches with Safari right now that are being worked on. There are also a few with Firefox. So my immediate suggestion, without knowing the type of error you're getting, would be to try using a different browser.

In terms of posting photos, it would help if we knew specifically what the trouble you had in posting photos. You can upload to the category that best suits your photo -- you can select from the menu when you're uploading the photo. The only categories not available are "Official" and "Tour". Community tends to mean personal photos and misc is a catch-all category -- like a photo of Greg in your friend's music store (or something!). If people have concert photos and want to post them, probably whoever posts their photos first will be the "category definer" and others will follow the lead and decide that this is the category for live shots. It's up to you where you upload them -- no one's policing that to make sure "this fits here" but you'll want to select the category where your photo is most likely to be viewed. If you have excellent Live shots and would like them posted in the Tour area, you should send them to me and I can upload them to the Tour section.

Just got an error trying to post about errors.
Had a lot of trouble posting Photos to the photo section.
Which sections are we supposed to be able to post to? Is it the case that we cannot post to Tour, but can post to Community and Misc? And what's the diff betw Community and Misc?

Hi Rachel,
I'm sorry you're having troubles posting a topic. Posts don't go through a pre-approval process, so your post should show up as soon as you make the thread. The loop you describe is similar to the glitch many were experiencing with adding friends/editing profile, etc. (but seems to be fixed now). If you'd send me a message telling me the type of computer you're using (PC or MAC), platform, and browser, that will help a lot. Just FYI, there are some issues that are being tweaked for those of you using Safari and some with Firefox, too. Finally, can you also tell me how you're getting to the "post a thread" screen? There are a couple of avenues, and if you tried a different route it *might* make a difference (although I'm not guaranteeing anything)! If anyone else is having trouble posting a topic (or any other problem), please tell me! It's easier if I can approach tech with a larger list of items than with individual issues.

Okay, I still feel like an idiot because I can't seem to post a topic. I click on 'Post a topic', write in both the Title and Description areas, and press Save, but every single time, my text disappears and a red message says, "Text is empty." Is it because I'm not writing in the tag box? Or does it need to be approved before it shows up? I'm thoroughly confused...

A couple things:
  • quite a few of the glitches have been fixed -- who is still having trouble editing their profiles, requesting friends, or sending messages? Please let me know -- and include the **** I requested earlier (type of computer, browser, platform).

  • The easiest way to get to a discussion format that we tend to be more familiar with (threads with recent replies) is from the front page. Scroll down to "Discussions" and click on the gold "More>>" right under the Discussion heading. That will take you to a page where it lists the "Community Topics" and the number of threads. Click on that and it opens to a "most active" discussion list and you'll see what recent threads have been posted, what's been recently reponded to, etc.

  • To post links, photos, etc., you need to use HTML codes. If you're not familiar with HMTL, there are several places with quick & easy guides: HTML guide and Quick HTML list. Here's the most important ****, just substitute "greater than" and "less than" signs for [ ] in this forumula:
posting a link: [a href="insertURLhere"]--this also works to photos you have on photobucket (etc.)
To post an image that's on the web somewhere: [img src="insertURLhereit needs to end in .jpg or .gif"]

  • Not sure about the search function for discussions. If you get to the discussions via the way I just posted, it shouldn't be too hard to find what you're looking for, at least in these initial stages of the boards. Will look in to categories for the discussions -- that may be more doable, but probably not for a little while.
Let me know if you have questions about any of this.

I was relieved to find this link to a most-recent-post-first format of the message board that's not easily found from the 'Discussions' click on the front page.

p.s. What HTML codes do we use to create links or post images?

Any plans for a search function for the discussions page? And I second TranslucentSparrow's request for different categories on the discussion board. I think it would help keep things more organized.

Maybe there could be different categories, sections on the discussion board......like we had on the older WF's board ? Will that be possible at some point?

Anyone else agree with that ?

So to ease the pain of folks searching for the bugs, I need to know a few things from those of you experiencing problems. Please post on this threaad or send me a message. Please be as specific as you can with the problem(s) you're having. I know most of the problems are in the edit profile/change photo/request friends module. But if you can be specific about what you can't do and what happens when you try to do it, that would help a LOT. Also, please tell me what type of computer you're using (Mac or PC), what browser (Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.) and what version of Windows (Vista, XP, etc.). We're working on it! Thank you!
